I am blessed to say that the Church has been a part of my life from my earliest childhood memory of standing on a pew in the church looking out the window and seeing the stubble field. I am not sure if it was fall or spring but I know I must have been pretty small to have been standing on the pew. That is a wonderful memory for me.

 

My journey through the church began with Sunday School. I can remember when I was five and I would jump the fence to get to the church, which was just behind our house. After finishing Sunday School and Catechism, I taught Sunday School.

 

In 1969 I was blessed to be married to Lois Bergum. In 1973 we were further blessed with a baby girl Gina and now I also have three grandsons—Jared, Kyle, and Landon. During our early years we continued to teach Sunday School and I served on the Church Board.

 

Lois and I often looked at the empty churches that we began to see, and we would talk about going to seminary so that we could share the Good News of Gospel with those in the communities whose churches were no longer able to support a minister; we felt that those communities needed to hear about Christ Jesus.

 

So, we decided that we would both go to seminary. Unfortunately, in 2008 my wife passed away. I decided to go ahead with seminary even though I wouldn’t have Lois with me. I attended a number of educational institutions over a period of about 8 1/2 years—the University of Calgary, Calgary; Newburgh Bible College, Mt. Vernon; St. Stephens College, Edmonton; Ambrose Seminary, Calgary; and Knox Seminary, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Those were wonderful years and I enjoyed that very important part of my faith’s journey. It was not just about the knowledge that I gained, but also about what I learned from the other students I journey with. The fellowship of other Christians in our lives is equally as important.

 

In 2016 I was invited to preach for a call to two congregation in the Peace River Country. I have served those two congregations from 2016 to 2021. The congregations were not large, but then we need to remind ourselves sometimes that time spent with the congregations is not about the numbers. It is about working together to gain a deeper understanding of the Triune God we serve. One of my favourite passages (and I have many) is found in the book of Jeremiah 29:13– When you have sought me with all your heart then I will let you find me. Another is found in Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. And while I could go on, I will include one more favourite passage, Romans 8:29-30  For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.”

 

And so now in my continuing spiritual journey, I have felt led to form a ministry that adheres to the traditional teaching and interpretation of Scripture. A ministry that is orthodox Reformed, based on the teaching of John Calvin. There have been a number of reformed theologians over the centuries that we still quote and whose interpretation of scripture we value. Even in the 20th and 21st centuries we have major theologians such as J.C. Sproul and Timothy Keller whose teachings are held in high regard in Reformed and Presbyterian Churches.

Our journey is a forever one. One that lasts a lifetime and then I think the journey continues in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.
